Cooling Pumps for Energy Transition Applications

As the global push toward net-zero emissions accelerates, reliable thermal management and fluid handling have become critical components of sustainable infrastructure. Calder delivers bespoke, high-performance cooling pump systems engineered specifically for the low carbon and renewable energy sectors. Our specialized cooling pumps are designed to operate flawlessly in some of the world’s most demanding and hazardous environments, ensuring that green energy projects maintain optimal efficiency, safety, and longevity.

Hazardous Area Compliance

In the 1990s we took the decision to specialise in hazardous area pumping applications. Since then, our experience of hazardous area standards and regulations such as ATEX, NORSOK, IECEx, and CSA has enabled us to excel in the supply of compliant packages to the offshore energy sector.

This experience has transferred well into energy transition applications. Whatever the process medium – hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, supercritical CO2 – our pump skids and supporting documentation will be compliant.

Case Study: A Recent Power-from-Shore Cooling Pump Package

In a recent major power-from-shore project on the Norwegian continental shelf, we engineered a robust closed-loop cooling circuit for an ATEX Zone 1 hazardous area. This highly bespoke system to support offshore electrification successfully circulates a Tri-Ethylene Glycol (TEG) and water mix at an impressive flow rate of almost 200 cubic metres per hour. The cooling medium is pumped through Duplex stainless steel plate heat exchangers, where it is cooled using seawater before being returned to the electrical consumers. This high-capacity thermal management is vital for preventing overheating in critical offshore equipment, directly contributing to a massive reduction in the platform’s carbon footprint.

Ensuring continuous operation, the system features two centrifugal pumps. This dual-pump setup allows for remote switching between pump lines, enhancing system reliability and operational flexibility. The system includes a skid-mounted expansion vessel with a nitrogen pre-charge to provide suction pressure to the pumps and accommodate thermal expansion of the cooling medium.

To protect the equipment and ensure operator safety, the system is housed in a robust 316 stainless steel environmental enclosure. This enclosure is designed to withstand explosive events and external fires, to ensure the integrity of the system under extreme conditions. Integrated soundproofing materials keep noise levels within acceptable limits, improving the working environment for offshore personnel. The enclosure protects sensitive components from salt spray, wind, and temperature fluctuations, helping maintain optimal performance.

Cooling Applications Across the Low Carbon and Renewables Sector

While power-from-shore projects highlight our capabilities in the marine environment, our high-flow cooling pump technologies are highly adaptable to other low carbon and renewable energy applications. Effective thermal management is universally required across the energy transition spectrum:

  • Green Hydrogen Production
  • Offshore Interconnectors
  • Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)
  • Wind Farms and Solar
  • Power-to-X (P2X)
