3D ENGINEERING DESIGN
Each new pump package design starts with the creation of a detailed 3D model. We use Solid Edge 3D CAD software to create this 3D model and to generate all engineering drawings for the pump package, including general assembly, manufacturing and fabrication drawings.
Check out this video case study following a Calder engineer through a project to design and build a pump skid for an offshore platform. The pump unit had to replace an existing, less powerful machine, but was limited to the existing footprint. Furthermore, the unit needed to be modular in order to be fed through the platform walkways to its operating location.
FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS CAPABILITY
The 3D model is also used as the basis for a variety of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) techniques for which we use ANSYS Mechanical to verify findings. We use these techniques to verify that the design meets the various customer requirements relating to lifting cases, seismic loads, torsional analysis, explosion related ‘blast cases’ etc. We also use FEA to develop designs to achieve valuable space and weight-saving benefits for our customers. For example, our engineering team use FEA to optimise baseframe design by determining exactly where to locate the supporting framework for maximum strength, whilst also reducing material where possible to save weight.
DESIGN APPROACH 2 STUDIES
Cyclical pressure pulsations in process fluids can create potentially damaging acoustical resonances. Design Approach 2 Studies model and analyse the acoustics of positive displacement pumping systems and their pipework to predict pulsations and vibrations in the system, either confirming that the equipment will operate within accepted parameters, or highlighting issues. It is becoming more common for customers to stipulate the requirement for a DA2 Study. As part of our offshore energy pump package offering, these studies are available for the more demanding applications.
