Buxton M5 motorway repairs

Buxton Water, the Skelmersdale-based hydrodemolition specialists, have ordered a Calder MultiJet, trailer-mounted, high pressure (HP) waterjetting unit.

The new waterjetting pump unit features the ultra-reliable Hammelmann 140 series pump and a Stage IV/Tier 4, ultra-low emissions Cummins power unit to offer 1240 bar at 61 litres per minute. Along with their current fleet of three Calder units, Buxton Water will use this unit for both manual lance and robotic hydrodemolition.

Buxton’s MultiJet fleet is currently busy with selective concrete removal work on the M5 Oldbury viaduct. During the current maintenance works between junctions 1 and 2 of the M5, a 1.8 mile section of elevated motorway will undergo concrete repair and joint replacement works. As part of their significant project award, Buxton Water will use HP water to remove existing concrete from reinforced concrete deck joints. HP water allows preparation of the joints for repair without damage to the rebar or the surrounding structure. Highways England describes the overall maintenance scheme as “the largest concrete repair project ever undertaken in the UK”.
